Little Black Booth Restoration

Little black booth wedding

Our Roll ‘a’ Booth was the first in our region of Greater Geelong. Since releasing this caravan photobooth in January 2014, it has become extremely popular. People are always looking for something unique for an event. We had found our niche in the market. But, there’s only so many events one vintage caravan can do. We started to turn down multiple events, then we got to thinking….it’s time for number 2.

Buying our first seemed so much easier. It was before the “boom” of vintage caravans being turned into anything and everything. But not now. Things seemed to be very expensive and overpriced for that “vintage” label. Already owning an old bondwood caravan, we sought after an aluminium van, no bigger than 11-12ft. A vision to give this one a completely different look but with the same functionality.

So we finally found one locally, at the Mill Markets. To say this van needed a little TLC would have been a massive understatement. But, who doesn’t like a challenge right? We set off to complete this mammoth task within the busiest month of the year, and to finish it all within 4-5 weeks.

We parked it up in Mum and Dad’s shed and moved our belongings and children in. This was home for the next few weeks.

As soon as we gutted this van, we knew we’d bitten off far more than we could chew. Seems to be a familiar story with us! We had to rebuild it section by section so it didn’t fall to the ground. We reframed from the inside, keeping as much of the aluminium intact as possible. We also had to ensure all parts, fittings and fixtures were ordered ahead of time, so we didn’t fall short of our completion date. As it turns out, we had to reframe, buy new windows, new floor, new walls, new trims, rewire and buy all new lighting and fittings, new tyres, new jockey wheel, exterior paint work, artwork and then of course there was the interior design and the construction on the operating photobooth. All in all, it would have been more cost and time effective to have built one from scratch. Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing?!

Fast forward 5 weeks and we did it. We literally worked night and day, every spare second. We even had the bags under our eyes and aching bodies to prove it. But nothing beats that feeling of accomplishment with a sexy new “Little Black Booth” joining our possie. We have always received such positive feedback about our other booths, but nothing compares to the reactions when people step inside our caravans. This booth was no different. If we had a dollar for every time someone has said “This is the best photo booth I have ever seen!”, we could probably retire (well, almost!). This is exactly why we do what we do. We hope to continually create new ways to deliver photobooths and memories within.

Hidden Treasures: Byrchendale

I keyed the address into Google Maps and off I went with the Little Black Booth in tow.

Estimated travel time: 2hrs and 47mins.

It’s a relatively easy drive about 90mins north of Melbourne, consisting of mainly double lane highways, which is a bonus. I put a lot of faith in Google Maps, especially when the destination is not so familiar to me and I have a strict timeline to adhere to. With a few minutes left until I was due to arrive, I started weaving through a few narrow roads, over livestock crossings (through mud and manure), wondering if Google Maps was sending me on a wild goose chase. Nestled amongst farming country, I then turn a corner and see a diamond in the rough, knowing full well I had reached my destination safely.

Byrchendale.

I pulled into the driveway, admiring the perfectly manicured gardens and lawn. I first passed the open air chapel, which was styled to perfection by the bride, Hannah Peters, and her tribe. I stopped to take photos before walking any further. I later found out this was built by the owner’s daughter Tegan and her husband for their wedding, back in 2014. It is a gorgeous open air chapel with rustic elements, creeping vines and a beautiful arch door for the bride to walk through.

Following the driveway through, I then reach the barn. This was built a couple years later and completed at the beginning 2017 to house the 12+ weddings they hold each year. The stunning timber roof beams and trusses respectfully match that of the open air chapel. It is a beautiful space, open to any styling choice you and your wedding desires. Hannah, being a visual merchandiser, had styled this palace to perfection. Everywhere I looked, was another detail she had thought of.

I parked the Little Black Booth outside next to my neighbour, Hops & Harvest. Based in Maroopna, Melissa and her adorable caravan bar seem to be a part of the decor at Byrchendale. With games, bar tables and umbrellas set up on the lawn area, it’s the prime position for a few canapés, pre wedding drinks and cheeky snaps whilst the bride and groom scoot off for photos.

It was a gorgeous summers night, everyone dancing outside under the festoons and continuing to make the most of our Little Black Booth.

The photos I took with my trusty iPhone probably don’t do this spectacular venue justice, but if you are willing to travel a little distance, you will stumble across this hidden gem and will be truly in awe of its potential for any event.

Thanks to Hannah for allowing Zuster to share in her special day and also to owners Ann, Geoff and Tegan for being so accommodating to me and my Little Black Booth. I will definitely be recommending this place in the future!
